My Photography Essentials for Vacation + SPRING SALE!

Is it Spring Break yet!?  This mamma is ready for the beach! This will be our first trip to Watercolor as a family of 5!   CAN. NOT. WAIT.  Let's just hope I survive the 11 hour car ride with three kids!  If you're getting away for some sun and plan to take some photos, here is my list of photography essentials to take on vacation.

Beach photo tips and tricks

My Spring Break Pack List:

  • Ketti Bag - I love my Ketti camera bag!  It holds all of my gear and looks like a stylish purse! I can fit two camera bodies, 2-3 lenses and a charger!  (Also been known to carry a diaper or two!)
  • 50 mm lens - I don't like to fool with a bunch of lenses when I'm spending time with my family.  The 50mm will give you a great low aperture and will cover most of your photography needs for vacation. Read more about why I love the 50mm lens in this post: Wondering What Kind of Camera To Get?
  • Extra memory cards - Make sure you bring cards with plenty of memory so you don't have to skip out on capturing any of your once in a lifetime moments.
  • Coordinating outfits for the kids - I like to pack a couple cute and coordinated outfit options for the kids.  If you are not sure the best way to coordinate everyone, check out these four photo styling tips to push the wardrobe confusion aside and focus on having a relaxing vacation.

Spring Break wish List

I am really coveting the Samsung NX300 smart camera and wish I had one to bring with me!  Its compact, has interchangeable lenses AND its a smart camera.  This means you can post straight to Facebook and Instagram while on vacation.  You don't need to drag your computer along just to share a few moments with your family and friends.  Check out Laura Winslow Photography's rave on this fun toy.  I can't wait to get my hands on one!

Lighting Tips for Beach Photography

FAQ:  When is the best time to take photos at the beach?

The best time to capture portraits at the beach is early in the morning or right before sunset when the light is nice soft and golden.   Mid day at the beach can be extremely bright making it difficult not to squint in photos.  You can learn more on how to shoot in a variety of lighting situations in Module 2 of the Beginners Photography Class
